Yes, Callers are very much an OD&D/1e AD&D thing!
In the early days, huge parties (12 or even more players!) were common.
And within those parties, you'd have a huge range of levels. Some PCs would be above level 10 while new players or people whose PCs got killed would start at Level 1.
I like this suggestion a lot, but I might wanna tweak it a little from how it was used historically. 🤔 Thanks for the notion!

@jack@xeno.glyphpress.com Cool! I cut my teeth on 3rd ed and I'm DMming a 5.0e / 3e hybrid game now. Mechanics and playstyles from 2e & earlier are of historical interest thing for me. I do try to know my roots. Also it seems like doing this would select for the future Class President types
