@azonenberg@ioc.exchange a bunch of network equipment will do xmodem over serial as a last ditch recovery mechanism. I’ve not seen anyone do HDLC.
For modern embedded devices the most common pattern seems to be a bootloader with USB2, that will do both CDC (ie serial over USB), typically at 1Mbps, *and* USB Mass Storage for firmware upload (eg .uf2).
Having hard wired UART serial is increasingly uncommon on devices. Even networking equipment typically encourages USB serial these days.
