Anyway, It's the 21st century. All zoos use animals as props, and all zoos are unnecessary anachronisms. You appear to be confusing zoos with wildlife sanctuaries. They aren't: just a tiny minority of animals held in zoos are endangered, and the vast majority are held in pens to sell tickets.
Europe isn't a special case. Zoos on the continent routinely kill thousands of perfectly healthy animals every year, and have been doing so for decades. Hardly in the interest of "education, preservation, reproduction, etc"; in European zoos, animals are disposable in the pursuit of maximum profit.
