Historically, the church was a place to connect with the local community. They were a proper third space. That seems to have changed a lot over the last 20 years. Now, it seems that the only people that still attend regularly are the “true believers” with their shitty politics and opinions. There is probably a fascinating sociology paper somewhere about the knock on effects of the Internet becoming mainstream as it relates to church attendance.
