Demographer Dr Liz Allen on how the census works, what it’s used for & why completing it is a contribution to the common good.
‘Censuses are personal for me. I wasn’t counted in the 1996 census because I was homeless. That’s part of why I ended up becoming a demographer – so no one is invisible when it counts.’
I know that census data have a mixed history & that some communities are rightfully sceptical about them. I know also that risks to our privacy are far greater now than ever before: if fascist states or other bad actors want to profile groups & individuals for targeting, census data are the tiniest of small fry compared to all the other resources they have available.
Quality census data are the bedrock of good policy making. I am with Dr Liz on this one.
