William Wyler decided to shoot Roman Holiday on location. To keep costs down, Paramount said he had to shoot it in B/W and cast an unknown as Princess Anne.
A teenage Audrey Hepburn had spent her teenage years trapped in Nazi-occupied Netherlands during WWII, which gave her a depth not often found in one so young, convincing Wyler she could carry the role.
During filming, Gregory Peck saw the daily rushes and was so blown away by Hepburn's on-screen presence that he called his agent to demand she receive equal billing with him above the title. Peck said he would look like a fool if she didn't because she was going to win an Oscar.
Hepburn received top billing with Peck and went on to win the Best Actress Oscar.
The movie was a huge hit and became an incredible advertising campaign for Vespa scooters whose sales went through the roof. And the iconic scene of the young princess getting a haircut inspired countless women in the '50s to ditch long hair for the daring new pixie cut.
