It could be useful if you wanted to move to a different phone on the same line on an incoming call, e.g. Answer in the kitchen but carry on in the living room. It was carried over to digital exchanges but because it could also be a problem, particularly with scam callers, Called Sub Clearing was introduced. That would have been very difficult to do with Strowger.
