Sometimes I’m genuinely surprised by my ability to intuitively navigate certain social situations now. I had a very odd professional situation happen this week with a colleague of sorts. He tried to redirect through LinkedIn or my personal email because he knew it was a conflict of interest. It was also something I very much didn’t feel comfortable helping with in any material way. The first thing I did was contain it to my professional email. (He could have found my personal one. It’s on the Internet. But he didn’t for some reason.) Then I gave him some very generic and unactionable advice (it was also honest) and sent him on his way. I looked helpful without helping or getting my name attached to it. I made it pretty clear where the limits of my “help” would be in future. And I think I came out with nothing but a good story.
