If you ever wonder about a certain character and why it looks the way it does, the answer is ALWAYS the same thing: People were too lazy to write it. Here are a few examples et (latin for "and") -> & nn -> ñ (the tilde actually used to be an n) ä, ö, ü -> ae, oe and ue respectively libra pondo -> ℔ and £ -> #, £ and "lb" (all referring to pound weight) fun fact, the line in £ is to signify an abbreviation, same for the line in ℔.
