I've found Terry Hayward's deaf dog training helpful with our pup Geo. Sharing this in case you could use simple & clear steps to form strong communication with visual cues. And Henry (a hearing dog learning visual cues) is adorable, too

Our family uses 👍🏻 as the marker. Reinforcers can be food, toy, activity, or praise. A combo we use a lot is 👍🏻, then 🤟 because Geo naturally checks in a lot on his own with us as a herding breed. If someone ever gives you 👍🏻🤟, then that's probably me meeting you in the world beyond the screen. I find myself doing these hand combos a lot wherever I go 🤣
