Does he not realize how many of your class are on a track for permanent residency and citizenship?
To me the litmus test is whether you have a finite or an open-ended contract.
As someone who has been an expat a guest worker on contract, I can comfortably say that this demographic rarely bothers to learn the local language.
I would try, mainly because I wanted to be a "good guest". But that was rare, the guest workers who learned the language usually guys who had relationships where they were robbing the cradle with age-inappropriate local women.

@RuthODay2@chaosfem.tw Yeah, the fact that he said that to a room full of French language students carried extra layers of irony. Like, you think we’re putting in all this work just so we can leave? Several of us told him last week that we were taking French for the immigration exams. What does he think that means? 🤦🏻♀️
