@faithisleaping@anarres.family Wow. Does he not realize how many of your class are on a track for permanent residency and citizenship? To me the litmus test is whether you have a finite or an open-ended contract. As someone who has been an expat a guest worker on contract, I can comfortably say that this demographic rarely bothers to learn the local language. I would try, mainly because I wanted to be a "good guest". But that was rare, the guest workers who learned the language usually guys who had relationships where they were robbing the cradle with age-inappropriate local women.
