"Thirsty, Wounded, Still Alive: Gaza’s Artists in the Water Line In Gaza’s endless water lines, three artists reveal how war devastates culture yet cannot silence the human spirit behind art. War fears music, theater and painting. It fears everything that still trembles with wonder. It fears the paper kites children fashion during fragile moments of ceasefire from scraps of paper and remnants of hope salvaged from beneath the rubble. That is why war does not confine itself to its first and most obvious purpose—the killing of human beings and the destruction of their bodies. With a particular cruelty, it pursues everything beautiful that human beings create. It seeks to erase our visual and sonic memory, lest anything remain to remind us of how we once smiled.
