story
I want to root through your soul
like a good used bookstore; slowly
panning across each jumbled shelf
reaching my fingers across the spines
opening the foxed pages,
seeing where other people
have underlined and made notes.
I want to lose track of time,
come to myself with a start to see
how much of the afternoon has faded
while I read just one more page.
outside, the street lamps come on
and I should think about supper;
I bring my armful to the till.
when I get home, I’ll
pile them all around me,
leaf through them one by one—
I won’t put them away.
not yet.
