Rather, he criticized liberal democratic societies for exercising power through institutions such as prisons, schools, medicine, and systems of knowledge. He argued that power is present throughout society and that democracy does not automatically guarantee freedom. While he questioned many assumptions of modern democracy, he did not advocate replacing it with authoritarian government. His work is better understood as a radical critique of how power operates than as a rejection of democracy itself.
