I also caught up with Deltarune, beating chapter 5. Not in a particularly completionist way (I didn’t explore every hidden room but I found some, and I believe I got all the recruits this chapter but I have missed some in an earlier chapter) and the story made me sad. Which maybe is a good thing, skillful storytelling and all that? But it put me in a bad mood all night after.
Mechanically I thought the game was great. This might truly be the best video game of all time. It introduces new stuff and builds on the old stuff. But I’ve got to slag it a little for introducing the “release the A button” style timing for the boss fight, a mechanic I can’t remember seeing before in previous chapters and I had a very hard time with. It took me many hours to beat that dumb boss. Once I got past that whole first part of charge-release I beat the other stages of the boss fight in one try. Throughout the game I was really rusty on all the bullet hell elements and on how to sequence the fights (when to defend, when to act, when to heal, how to pace items etc); even though it’s only been a few months since I played chapter four I came at this as worse than a noob so I was pretty challenged. Well, it’s not news that I suck at video games. Still get to enjoy them.♥︎
Because of my War on Screen, I took a break from all “glowy” video games all summer, including all Retroid Pocket games (which is where I have Deltarune). I’ve only played a little bit on the original DMG-001 (where I only have one cartridge, it’s called Yakuman) which oddly enough even though it’s ghosty pea soup the screen is more relaxing for me. It does not glow. I took the Retroid back out because I really was in the mood for Deltarune but I’m not sure I’m gonna jump right into a new game just after. We’ll see. Maybe finish up Omori or Eastward or Mother 3, or start up a new playthrough of Sweet Home or The Guardian Legend, or just try to git gud at Wave Race on the GBC emulator (I figured out the RetroArch settings to replace the flickering with transparency), or more likely just let it be for a while.
