We woke one day to find our Sony Freeview recorder had bricked itself because of a bad firmware update. The fix, as I remember, was to leave it for several days until it finally sorted itself out. (I hypothesised that it was something like an off-by-one error which eventually resolved itself when the counter had finally wrapped round to zero again, but of course I had no proof.)
