@trashpanda@m.alittlenook.net I used to be a member of a local ham radio group. Active members at the time: about 50 old guys and one older woman. So about %2. There was a small minority that was pretty right wing and prejudice. I could have lived with that but the rest of the membership didn't stand up to it even when they went over the line. I don't think its OK to use racial slurs on the air. P.S. We were all white.

@HikerGeek@mas.to @trashpanda@m.alittlenook.net We have more women in our group (a mix of people interested in the hobby themselves, and licensed wives of more active radio operators), but definitely a significant right wing presence. Surprisingly, also a lot of left wingers, but they don't talk politics like the right wingers do (for whatever reason). I haven't heard any racial slurs from our local club, but we are in California. I've listened in on some radio traffic in Texas and I had to turn it off (racial slurs left and right 😬 ). I think California looks a lot better... reflection of the state/area you are in and the overall politics, and the age group and racial makeup of the hobby pushes it all rightwards, in many cases.
