In some countries, one can just walk into a lab and order tests for themselve for a small fee. In much of continental Europe, Synlab (formerly Quattro Labs) offers such services, and they tend to be reasonably good and reasonably cheap (because most of continental Europe has aggressive public health price bargaining bodies).

@psistarpsiii@tacobelllabs.net The reason doctors often try this simple medicine change trick is, it works more often than it should. Even with the same active ingredient, generic medicines often have differences, often poorly studied ones, so switching between them, sometimes based on personal experience of some brand having particular quirks, is kind of a doctor's version of "Have you tried turning it off and on again?".
