The most annoying thing about the very loud, US-centric discourse around AI is that it is exported to my part of the world. Most people from Asia are rather nonchalant about AI. Sure, we have worries about AI replacing our jobs, but we don't go being dramatic about it online. You hardly ever see people going on long tirades about how AI will destroy the world. Also, virtue signaling is pretty much not a common thing on my side of the world. People usually frown on it, and many people consider it gauche. Why? Because bragging, or even being loud and nasty about a virtue, is not something that is looked upon with respect due to our culture. I.e., humblebragging makes people think you are too proud. You don't see people proudly declaring that if they see people using AI, they would unfollow, or anyone posting about how people who use AI are evil, etc.The usual doomer talk is just not a very common thing on Chinese or Malaysian social media. I'm not sure why that is, but it is most probably because we are very pragmatic people and quite technology-positive. In Asia, we see technological progress as a very good thing. FYI, I still remember in the early 2000s when I was still a journalist. When I used to attend interviews with press from around the world, it was always the Asians who had the most advanced and smallest-looking voice recorders. We already had slim little recording devices that nobody else had back then. Basically, we often embrace technological progress. Of course, we have outliers who will complain here and there, but they are very rarely considered anything but weirdos to us. However, in the age of social media, we can't seem to avoid bumping into trolls who come to our feeds, our posts, or our little forums. They are nasty to us, exporting discourses that are basically alien to ours, and causing fights, discomfort, and anger. We are often dragged into fights we don't even want to be a part of, and we are even accused of things we don't have any idea about. There is no cure for this, of course.
