Today I Learned:
That the included program ‘ntfsfix’ can be used to clear the record of bad sectors on a Windows partition.
I had cloned a Windows system from a bad hard drive that had some bad sectors. The file system log that noted those bad sectors came over in the clone, even though the drive I cloned it to is fine and has no bad sectors.
Found the problem when I was trying to use gparted to shrink the partition.
sudo ntfsfix -bd /dev/sda4
After running that, gparted let me shrink the partition
