@freshstart@hachyderm.io @ColinTheMathmo@mathstodon.xyz I agree. Moreover, he term "standard deviation" is well established in statistics and should not be used here. I haven't seen a negative standard deviation before.

Its a reasonable way to compare the variation now to that in the past. The graph having negative and positive is simply how many SDs above (positive) or below (negative) the current temperature is compared to the mean from the period stated. It doesn't mean that the SD, as such, is negative. It would seem the SD is taken from modelling the variation over the period 1991-2020 as a normal distribution.
