Limit the number of variables and points of failure An antenna analyzer as a learning tool is a great way to see if the antenna is at least behaving roughly like it should, and also takes a lot of guesswork out of troubleshooting I wish that 10m, especially over line of sight, were more active around my QTH as that makes the Technician section the best place to learn… and where the homemade antennas are much more manageably sized

    @flyingsaceur@ioc.exchange sure, I was being a little facetious (in the theme of “too many experts” in this hobby). Either a reputable EFHW or a self-made dipole is a great starter antenna. An analyser if you have one, but can be easily trimmed just with the radio’s SWR meter and sweeping the band. Dipole is super simple and hard to screw up, EFHW is easier to feed at one end and throw the other into a tree
