progress. brought it down to add_drivers+=" algif_hash af_alg ccm libcurve25519 crc8 authenc dm_crypt aesni_intel gf128mul encrypted_keys trusted asn1_encoder tee aead dm_integrity dm_bufio async_xor async_tx dm_mirror dm_region_hash dm_log dm_mod crypto_user ". There is almost certainly still some unnecessary modules in there but ~good enough. Still dont know why this is a problem in general & why now in particular.
