I saw this article go past earlier, and didn't think much of it, yeah yeah, grid congestion, lots of ai datacentres, see that everywhere.
Then I read it, and a couple of numbers stuck out.
First off, 2025 peak electricity demand for the UK was 46GW. Which is a little higher than I thought, I usually say it's about 40GW for the UK. But that number isn't a major issue. The numbers that made me double take are these:

"the amount of electricity capacity being requested by projects seeking to connect to the grid had risen from 41 GW to 125 GW". A hundred and twenty five gigawatts. That's the size of the waiting list to connect to the UK grid. Now it doesn't say if all of that is purely consumers of energy, or if some of those connections are for generation capacity. But that's almost three times the current peak electricity demand in the UK. Three times the current peak, in new connections. I. Uh. Wow. 2/n
