Also yeah your social status surely does determine how available the resources to learn are. That it's not THE reason one gets good at something though. Lots of people with access to computers and the internet never learn programming. Even then I suppose you could argue that genetics are luck too, and that's where I argue that society should do better at treating people with different genetics and generally diverse skills equally. However I think when one talks about merit they focus on whether people are judged for who they are when they are hired rather than some other factor. It makes sense that people that are best at a certain job get to do that job, what I think we should focus on is that everybody gets an equal chance to live and enjoy their life regardless of things that are out of their control like interests and skills.
