But gaming experience on a console I'll probably don't use that much isn't worth the risk of electrical shock trying to fix it, all things considered.

New LCD for the game gear received and installed today. I got a cheap kit from ebay, figured out it couldn't be worse than the original display. Installation requires soldering a flexible pcb and 6 wires. The one I got appears to be a bit of a "mix and match", using a controller meant for "laminated" screen but an lcd that can be simply set where the original was. It needs a bit of care to make sure nothing will shortcircuit or rattle around, the kit comes with insulation tape
