Just as the unpaid labour of women in families invisibly supports the careers of men, the services provided by workers who support clients in their own homes & communities is the edifice on which the whole system of community care rests. Policies guiding deinstitutionalisation were designed in consultation with professional disciplines to which the labour of these workers was barely visible. And it shows. They’re just the support workers (women, new migrants, not privileged, educated professionals like me). They dont count. This is an historical issue, it’s a class issue & it’s time it was fixed. Let’s give this work the recognition, the respect & the funding it deserves. Workplace violence is a fact of life for many care workers – why do we tolerate it? https://theconversation.com/workplace-violence-is-a-fact-of-life-for-many-care-workers-why-do-we-tolerate-it-288369?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Good%20and%20bad%20news%20for%20mortgage%20holders%20-%203890039605&utm_content=Good%20and%20bad%20news%20for%20mortgage%20holders%20-%203890039605+CID_795bdaf473b0bb05ef1509e0c396e6f2&utm_source=campaign_monitor&utm_term=Workplace%20violence%20is%20a%20fact%20of%20life%20for%20many%20care%20workers%20%20why%20do%20we%20tolerate%20it
