Drivers' license scanners were originally created to help catch fake IDs; the benefits to bars, given liability issues, ar obvious. But some brands *marketed* themselves with their ability to capture other data, to help create a customer database for targeted ads, etc. See, e.g., p 59 of https://www.nationalacademies.org/publications/10656.
