With one diagnosis, or two or three, you're branded crazy, sick, and there's no way around it. No matter what you do or how well you do it, you're always the crazy one. Over time, you realize that the people and environments you try to adapt to aren't worth the effort. And you stop caring about them, you stop pretending to be someone you're not and trying to do what you can't, all for the comfort and peace of mind of others. And you let everything fall apart: family, friends, relationships, clients. Even the cat, the dog, the lizards in the yard, and the rats in the attic cease to be important and worthwhile. If the basics—eating, pooping, sleeping, and breathing—are such a chore, social life can't be easy. Then you wonder if it wouldn't have been better to live and die alone, to withdraw into yourself and never come out again.
