That a new multi-year detailed independent investigation has confirmed (once again) that NSW Police has a deeply ingrained toxic internal culture is not really the main news here (at least, not to anyone paying attention). Instead, let's focus on two things. 1. Can we now agree that this is not 'a few bad apples'? After yet another major report into systemic nature of racism, misogyny, nepotism, bullying and violence in yet another police force, can we start to consider that maybe there is something about this institution that needs to fundamentally change? That our whole notion of modern policing might be fundamentally faulty?

The response of NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon Lanyon didn't ask for this report; he inherited it from his predecessor, Karen Webb (the first woman to be appointed NSW Police Commissioner in the 100+ year history of the organisation). Webb initiated the investigation back in 2024 after reporting by the ABC based on interviews with a dozen current and former officers. She resigned soon afterwards, before the investigation was complete. Now Commissioner Lanyon says he accepts all 29 of the report's recommendations, mentioning that he is disappointed but not surprised by the investigation's findings. If he was not surprised, why hadn't he been saying and doing more about this much sooner? His response here raises questions about the level of his commitment to change, especially since he himself was accused of being a 'jobs for the boys' candidate when he was first appointed following Webb's departure.
