@Absolute_Slayer@lemmy.world Muscles used to be a result-means of-for 'male' accomplishments: hunting, territory exploration, protection, then later, building, toiling at the crops, etc. Today, muscles are no longer representative of that, especially if the their purpose is to simply attract positive attention. Funny enough, they can sometimes be telling of insecutities. And 'beauty' as a notion appears to be shifting to become more of a function of status and standards. The health benefits are still there though.

    True, the shift from functional labor to aesthetics has definitely changed the psychology behind it. But hey, even if it starts from a place of seeking validation, ending up with a supportive community of gym bros is a pretty great byproduct.
