@quixoticgeek@social.v.st Re-replied for sharing purposes, on the topic of which is the least worse fibre: Don't forget that linen/flax takes a lot less water to grow and even wash! You don't really need to irrigate linen, and while it's on the field it's also a field of flowers so nice for pollinators... And once it's a garment - production will always be resource intensive when industrially produced - it will also need a lot less washing than cotton, since it gets stinky so much slower than clothes made from cotton and gods forbid polyester. Linen is not necessarily harder to produce, but the massive massive scale non-local textile production that took off took off after a time when cotton was made very cheap by colonialism and slavery. Even as late as the 1920s linen was normal for many parts of the wardrobe, so it's not that long ago! The current fabric production global engine is keyed to cotton, so it can't be just flipped on a switch back to linen, but linen is thankfully returning in some ways. Doesn't hurt that it's very good in the heat... *eyeing the climate*
