ISLAND (2007)

There is a long tradition of using the concept of “island” as a metaphor for the world as a whole, as in “This Island Earth.”
This painting—the first in a series of works employing that metaphor—began as a meditation on the necessity for humanity to explore beyond the reaches of our immediate environs in space. 1/7

During walks around the local high school, I’ve been struck by how often the traffic islands in the parking lots resemble small islands in a large body of water. 2/7
