Inoue-sha (井上社) first stood at the confluence of the Kamo and Takano rivers (鴨川/高野川).
Destroyed during the Ōnin War (応仁の乱) in 1470, it moved to its current position (close to Shimogamo-jinja's main hall) in 1592.
It came under the direct management of Shimogamo in 1629.
