@pendell@mastodon.social @evacide@hachyderm.io growing up I was really poor. My mother would often use checks knowing they would take several days to clear and hoping she would have the money to cover it by then. Like if the kitchen was empty on Wednesday but she didn't get paid till Friday she would buy food on Wednesday hoping the check wouldn't clear till atleast Friday.

@vrek @pendell@mastodon.social @evacide@hachyderm.io I wonder whether that was the shops only bringing the checks to the bank on friday when they knew that your mother (and probably a lot of other customers) had the money. either as a service to the community, or simply because this way they got their money (a couple of days later), while if they had done otherwise they probably wouldn't have got their money anyway, and they would have lost customers, if the courts decided to give prison sentences because the people doing this wouldn't have been able to pay the fines (especially if this was happening in the US or other places that haven't abolished debt slavery)
