I think of myself as a generally capable person in most social situations, but I'm sometimes reminded that my predilection for odd humor isn't always consistent with mainstream aesthetics. Example: I had to go to the bank yesterday to deposit a few checks, and while at the service counter, the teller asked where I'd gone to high school because my name and face were familiar to him. As it turned out, we hadn't gone to school together but had played on the same little league baseball team more than (checks watch) 45 years ago. This realization was followed by the kind of friendly smalltalk you'd expect. He asked if I still lived in town, and I told him yes but added that I'd been away in the city for 30 years, to which he beamed "but now you're back". "Just like a rash", I quipped. He chuckled politely, but my remark caused a look of **absolute horror** to spread across the face of his co-worker, who had been observing this mini-reunion with amusement. The baseball acquaintance and I shook hands regardless, and I made my way to the exit. Glancing back on my way out the door, his colleague's face was still contorted, and she was shaking her head with residual disgust as though I had just insulted her family. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
