Townshend did it with his SG: turn the neck pickup's vol down all the way, then switch rapidly between the bridge and middle positions on the switch.
I hear you on the open design. I'm okay with it, but I'm no pro.
I think I have a cheap one on one guitar that's the usual toggle outside, closed switch body inside - from a wiring harness bought from 'zon.

@eyesquash@mastodon.world Oh, gotcha. The switch I’m using now would work the same way, no problem. From the outside, it looks and functions the same way as a standard switch. It’s just different underneath the surface.
