@ericjames@booping.synth.download @mynameistillian@plush.city Infrastructure and self-hosting doesn't need to be that technically complicated. With our current tech, docker makes things quite easy - usually one config file and one command to start the container. I probably spend an hour per month on average maintaining and updating my server and I have loads of services running. Also, on the other end of the scale, cubans have been running their own internet by throwing cables between buildings by hand. Running a 90's/00's-style internet is technically quite cheap and straightforward I think.

@ericjames@booping.synth.download On the other hand, self-hosted/small community-scale email has been made extremely difficult by google and microsoft. There are so many hoops to jump through if you want to have your emails deliver reliably to gmail or outlook inboxes.

  • @banshee@woof.tech how about no commands? i'm the kinda wolf who finds even basic stuff like HTML and CSS daunting. i don't have the patience to worm my way through a terminal for prolonged amounts of time
