This is cool. But new train sitting on the siding for 4 hours to wait for a freight train when the entire journey is supposed to take 4 hours is the actual problem no one in government wants to solve. VIA Rail remains a national embarrassment because of successive Liberal and Conservative policy. Now they’ll just be a national embarrassment with new rolling stock. Oh and people can barely afford to take it across the country. It is mostly an embarrassing tourist fraud with spectacular views. Ask me how I really feel. 😆 🚂 https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/via-rail-newbattery-diesel-locomotives-9.7288814?utm_source=flipboard&utm_medium=activitypub #viaRail #canpoli #cdnpoli #canada #transportation #tourism

@chris@mstdn.chrisalemany.ca I don’t like T. Hopper as a journalist, but his piece on how Canada’s railways were founded on an “orgy of corruption” reveals how railways are rooted in squander for politics and profit. Has it changed? https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/railroad-building-in-the-19th-century-was-an-orgy-of-corruption-but-hey-it-built-a-country

@chris@mstdn.chrisalemany.ca Yeah, the railways "can't afford" passenger rail interfering with the profitable freight lines .. "Canadian Pacific Railway essentially won the lottery. They were given the modern equivalent of $1.5 billion in cash and infrastructure, handed a land grant the size of Ireland and assured a 20-year monopoly."
