debian Just Works except when it inexplicably fucking doesn't
so for yt-dlp i have to run the windows binary in wine
which means i have to install the ffmpeg.exe and deno.exe (javascript) binaries by hand for shit to work
at least windows yt-dlp updates and works correctly
this is what the yt-dlp linux "binary", downloaded from the yt-dlp site itself, does:
$ /home/fun/bin/yt-dlp
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "", line 198, in _run_module_as_main
File "", line 88, in _run_code
File "/home/fun/bin/yt-dlp/__main__.py", line 14, in
import yt_dlp
File "/home/fun/bin/yt-dlp/yt_dlp/__init__.py", line 18, in
from .downloader.external import get_external_downloader
File "/home/fun/bin/yt-dlp/yt_dlp/downloader/__init__.py", line 26, in
from .external import FFmpegFD, get_external_downloader
File "/home/fun/bin/yt-dlp/yt_dlp/downloader/external.py", line 12, in
from ..postprocessor.ffmpeg import EXT_TO_OUT_FORMATS, FFmpegPostProcessor
File "/home/fun/bin/yt-dlp/yt_dlp/postprocessor/__init__.py", line 4... Read more
i'm sure it's trivial and also i have no idea and it shouldn't fucking happen
ubuntu's fix the papercuts programme was a tremendous contribution to the free desktop and i'm deeply annoyed they went slop
EDIT: thanks, I have a working yt-dlp and don't need a new hobby getting the nonworking one to work, thanks. my point is that none of the workarounds you are listing - all different - should be necessary.

@davidgerard@circumstances.run Not to worry, my iPad Pro M2 has your back! Since the iPadOS 26.6 release earlier this week it has taken to inexplicably crashing and rebooting a couple of times a day. *And there are no diagnostics and no CLI workarounds!* (This is not happening on my other iThings.)
