@cstross@wandering.shop @davidgerard@circumstances.run @pndc@social.treehouse.systems I have gone down this rathole! Upgrading iPods to SSD is very possible, but not exactly easy -- however there is a whole cottage industry out there who will sell you pre-upgraded ones, including things like USB-C charging and bluetooth. The downside is: the primordial iPod OS can't address more than about 30k songs no matter how big the "disk" is. this may lead you to trying to use Rockbox instead. This may make you cry. https://www.jwz.org/blog/2022/09/ipod/

@jwz@mastodon.social @cstross@wandering.shop @davidgerard@circumstances.run @pndc@social.treehouse.systems I had an iPod 5.5g with 1Tb of SD storage. It had Rockbox, as I wanted to provision it with rsync, and iPod OS/iTunes scramble track names to placate the RIAA. It worked nicely, except that USB disk mode was flaky in Rockbox and I needed to boot it into iPod OS to copy files. I now have a (Rockboxed) Hifiwalker H2, which I can vouch for. Though Rockbox has no support for Bluetooth, apparently due to IP issues of some sort.
