Since the reason for making the Jolla phone my daily driver is to get away from US tech I am installing Android apps from F-droid if they're there. That meant that my Matrix client (Element X) doesn't use Google's notification servers and I had to look into setting up me own. Well that was a breeze since it's a mostly one-click installation if you're already running a Nextcloud server! Unexpectedly smooth transition over to my own Unified Push infrastructure - that I now will immediately put other family members on who are on degoogled Androids.

So, initial conclusion after having had the device for a few hours: Yes, the new Jolla Phone can be used as a daily driver to start making the switch away from US-dominated mobile phone software to free & European stacks. However - that's only because it runs Android apps, and very smoothly at that. They feel just like native ones, and copying data from Proton Pass on the Android side into the native (Gecko based!) system web browser Just Works(tm). I knew I would lose NFC payment support though, which seems to be the only thing I used on my iPhone that I won't be able to have a functional replacement for. I'll need to learn to carry plastics again I guess. (hardware wise? I mean, it's a thin large screened phone like they all are. takes photos, shows things on the screen. good stuff)
