@Extelec@mstdn.social @dtl@8bitorbust.info @a2es@mstdn.social the VRX uses an omnidirectional 3dBi "donut" antenna. It's far easier moving the dish to pick up the signal on a waypoint planned flight than something high gain on the wing (if I understood you correctly).

    @davep@infosec.exchange @dtl@8bitorbust.info @a2es@mstdn.social Hi-gain and narrow beam are exactly the same (Physics) so the focus of either should be exactly the same (beam angle) for a particular gain. I was talking about making one. The engineering at 5Ghz is really tight for high gain designs, but with a dish, you only have to worry about focal point, which is a point at source and tune for maximum smoke kind of solution. (especially if you use the sun to find your focal point)
