A serial killer wouldn’t necessarily do well in this situation. They tend to get off on being sneaky and killing people with no way to defend themselves. A combat vet is probably their worst possible choice, which is why it’s a popular trope.

Instead of a serial killer, maybe an obsessive weirdo who can figure out how anything works (and how they can be made to not work) and really, really wants to go home. The aliens keep trying to find their captive, but parts of the ship keep breaking.
