The most charitable interpretation I can come up with is that she had been talking about her childhood, had mentioned the big skies, and the interviewer followed up with this question. So, it's a bit of synecdoche, like "What were the skies like (in the place you lived) when you were young?" I haven't been able to confirm it; I can't find a clip of the interview that doesn't start with this question.
