Today's additional bit of hatred towards Wordpress: you cannot define a fallback font stack, not even a simple sans-serif/serif choice.
Either use Google Fonts or accept default serif everywhere (unless you redefine the CSS variable yourself in a custom rule.)
It's intentional btw :)
