The faintly fragrant wood of paulownia trees was traditionally used for making clothes chests in Japan.
Because it contained natural insect and mold repellent, and because it was slow to burn (important when fires were a constant threat), the wood was particularly prized

There was once a tradition (borrowed from the mainland) of planting three paulownia trees upon the birth of a daughter, so that when she was grown she would have a ready-made dowry. So valuable was the fast-growing paulownia that it was known as 'gold wood'. #桐 #paulownia #Japan
