This video has been going around the car communities online, and for good reason. The thesis: “canyon carving”—the activity of driving cars in a spirited manner on sparsely-used mountain or rural roads—is getting ruined by more frequent crashes and deaths caused by people who take unreasonable risk. And a big part of this is social media, which rewards people who post videos of outrageous or dangerous behavior with popularity. The backroads have always been a place of unwritten arrangement: traffic is sparse, and law enforcement tends to close one eye, and in return drivers get to proceed at a brisk pace, but never exceeding their skill and safety margin. Everyone has fun, and nobody gets hurt (any more than normal driving). But these days, drivers are reckless. Wrecks are constant. Neighbors are justifiably upset.
