@maffia@mastodon.social From a spiritual perspective I think a socialist concept of self-reliance needs to contain an aspect of learning to be satisfied with a decent standard of living (Matthew 6:26-33). In order to contribute to the common good according to ability the human person needs to be as capable as they can be to do so. That said, capacity looks differently for every person and in different periods of life.

@maffia@mastodon.social Lastly I think such a concept should be informed by a personalist idea of the human as made up by both individuality and community. Self-reliance is about doing your part to support a community that in turn supports and carries you forward together towards goals that are deliberately or democratically identified and chosen.... I'm thinking aloud here, but I think such a concept could be a helpful positive cultural norm to build on in socialist and adjacent movements.
