@StarkRG@myside-yourside.net @lianna@micro.webgarden.click I don't think it's fair to say that's it's been disproved/debunked. But the bulk of the counterargument is that people warned that it might happen, and then it apparently happened. And the article uses this as evidence that it was a hoax inspired by the people saying it could happen. I really don't think this is good reasoning.

@StarkRG@myside-yourside.net @lianna@micro.webgarden.click The explanation that people pointed out that it was possible/probable and then the possible/probably thing *actually happened* is not that far fetched. And I think the desire to dismiss an apparent testimony is itself driven by ableism. The article also focuses on debunking the idea that the ad was personalised, which I'm not sure was part of the original story to begin with.

@Misofist@girlcock.club @lianna@micro.webgarden.click There's plenty of evidence that nobody was actually hospitalized and no evidence at all that anyone was. Again, that's not to say that the concern isn't real, it definitely is and you won't ever find me buying something whose primary purpose is to spy on me or to advertise at me. I'm just saying that it doesn't look like this particular incident actually happened. https://www.tuaw.com/2025/12/21/viral-smart-fridge-ad-claim-traced-to-online-joke/
